SPOTLIGHT ON INTEREST GROUPS: Men’s Poker

January 9, 2019 by Bob Fulton

If the first time you ever played poker was in a casino with a bunch of skilled veterans, chances are that you did not have a good time. A much more enjoyable alternative is to play in a relaxed, social environment where everyone is there to just have fun. That's what the Men's Poker interest group is all about.

Cards On Table

We are a really fun group of members, alumni, and even a few folks from the community. According to Newcomers alumnus and Men's Poker coordinator Scott Thompson, "We play dealer's choice, and the games range from Five Card Draw to Super Omaha, and all games in between. Betting is nickel/dime/quarter a maximum and raise limits. It’s a $5 buy-in, where a big winner would make $8, and the big loser about the same."

The group plays on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, year-round, rotating between member homes. The host provides a meal and beverages. Come join a lively game of Men's Poker!

You can learn more about this interest group and sign up for Men's Poker here.

TECH TIP: Setting Up Contacts For Your Account

November 30, 2018 by Bob Fulton

Welcome to Tech Tips! In this monthly series, our Tech Ops team will share simple tips and techniques, to help you get the most out of the Club's technology resources.

Setting Up Contacts For Your Account

In our Newcomers Club, membership is at the household level; yearly membership dues are charged to the household, not to each individual.

This is also true in our web-based membership system: each household has a single account. Within each account, one login (email/password) is designated as the primary contact. The primary contact can perform account level administration, such as:

  • Pay membership dues online
  • Set the directory photo (encouraged!)
  • View the history of registrations and payments
  • Create additional contacts

However, all contacts, including the primary contact and any additional contacts, can perform many actions on the website, such as:

  • Register one or multiple attendees for events such as general meetings
  • Pay online for general meetings or special events
  • Sign up for interest groups
  • View the event calendar, the member directory and all other sections of the website

To create an additional contact, the primary contact can log into the website and perform the following steps:

  1. Go the ABOUT YOU page
  2. Click the Contacts tab
  3. Click Add New Contact
  4. Enter the contact's full Name and Email address
  5. Enter their Phone or Mobile number (optional) - all other fields should normally be left empty
  6. Clear the red circle to deselect Do not show this in my public profile (assuming that it's OK for other members to see this contact)
  7. Click SAVE
  8. Click SAVE & CONTINUE

If you have any questions, or if you need to change the primary contact on your account, contact tech@estesparknewcomers.org.

Weekend Warriors

September 6, 2018 by Bob Fulton

Weekend Warriors

Come join the Weekend Hiking Group and explore the great outdoors in the Estes Park area with fellow hikers. Although anyone is welcome to join, this group is targeting members who work during the week and are unable to participate in the regular weekday hiking groups. Expect hikes between 3-6 miles in length with an average elevation gain of 1,000 feet. Some summer hikes can be 8-10 miles to access some higher elevation alpine lakes. This group generally hikes on Saturday or Sunday morning but occasionally schedules a Friday hike. For more information, email weekendhiking@estesparknewcomers.org.

IMPORTANT: In order to participate in the hiking group, each member must complete the most recent 2023 release form with an ink signature, not a typed signature. Please download the form and email a copy (scan or photo) to waivers@estesparknewcomers.org.

SPECIAL EVENTS: Grand Time At The Picnic

August 30, 2018 by Bob Fulton

2 COLLAGE

The inaugural Great Newcomers Picnic on August 26th was a huge success with nearly 120 people attending! From the delicious food, foot-tapping music and lively games of volleyball, horseshoes and ladder ball, a grand time was had by members, alumni and prospective members alike.

Guests arrived bearing a wonderful variety of appetizers, desserts, and side dishes, and the newly formed Newcomers BBQ Dudes lead by Kurt Ratsch and fellow smokers Jerry Allison, Bob Fulton, and Scott Thompson provided mouth-watering pulled pork and beef brisket. Janene Centurione lent her outstanding decorating skills to the event, transforming the O’Connor Pavilion picnic area into an inviting and festive atmosphere. Our registration team of Stan Osborne, Rod Unruh, Kendra Wallis and Kreg Leymaster kept things moving smoothly at the check-in table. And many thanks to parking directors Dave Bretz, Dan Centurione and Ken Zornes for keeping all the cars in line.

We’re hoping the Great Newcomers Picnic will become an annual event, so if you missed this one, be sure to join us next year!

Travel Club

August 23, 2018 by Bob Fulton

Travel Club

In the Newcomers Travel Club, members share their adventurous stories and photos from various trips they’ve taken, both domestic and abroad. You will learn valuable travel tips while enjoying the experiences of your fellow newcomers. The Travel Club typically meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month (from September to May) at 6:30 p.m. in the Hondius Room at the Estes Park Library (due to the Library schedule this day may vary month to month). Members of Travel Club participate for a variety of reasons – some of us are looking for a preview of a trip we’re thinking about making, some are looking for tips to make travel easier or perhaps less expensive, and many of us are ‘armchair travelers’ who simply enjoy hearing about the adventures of our friends to other parts of the world. Regardless of the reason, we all enjoy getting together.

For more information, email Travel@estesparknewcomers.org.
