Newcomers Updates – Zoom Meeting This Thursday at 5P

July 21, 2020 by Tech Ops

We hope you are all staying healthy and enjoying summer in Estes Park.

Over the past few weeks, the Newcomers Board has met several times to line up our plans the 2020/21 fiscal year. As such, we have many updates to communicate to our members. Our goal is to find ways for Newcomers to resume activities in a healthy manner which is consistent with the latest guidelines and best practices from our medical communities.

On Thursday, we will be hosting a Zoom meeting at 5P to update our membership on the plans. We will cover a few topics and leave time at the end for Q&A. Our Zoom account will allow up to 100 participants. If we reach that number and some members are unable to join, a recording of the meeting will be available on our website the next day. We will also follow up the meeting with emails detailing next steps for our members.

We hope you can join on Thursday at 5P.

Staying Informed

May 31, 2020 by Tech Ops

A committee has been formed to provide members with updates regarding Club activities and group gatherings. This committee will monitor the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as State, Federal and Local governments regarding social gatherings, and then report their findings to the Board. The Board will act upon recommendations of the committee to make a determination as to when it is appropriate to lift suspension of Club-sponsored activities, as well as necessary measures to keep our members safe.

In a creative approach to help members engage with each other during this time of social distancing, a number of Interest Groups have been participating in activities online using Zoom technology. Meeting virtually has been a great success, and we encourage everyone to join in and stay connected. More to come on how you can join and participate in virtual Club-sanctioned activities.

We are all in this together, and the Board encourages members to reach out and stay connected during this very challenging time.

February 14, 2020 by Bob Fulton

Welcome to Tech Tips! In this monthly series, our Tech Ops team will share simple tips and techniques, to help you get the most out of the Club's technology resources.

Check the History Tab To See If You're Already Registered For an Event

If you're not sure whether you registered for a general meeting or some other event, there is an easy way to check:

  1. Sign in to the website
  2. Click ABOUT YOU in the top menu
  3. Click the History tab
  4. Check the list of registrations and payments
History Screenshot

The most recent items are at the bottom of the list, so you may need to scroll down to find the event you're looking for. If you don't see "Event Registered" for the event you're wondering about, then you haven't yet registered. If you paid online for the event when you registered, then on the same date (the day you registered) you will see "Event payment" and the amount paid.

If you need any help with the website please contact tech@estesparknewcomers.org with your questions.

Get Interested: Travel Club

November 11, 2019 by Tech Ops

Southeast Asia was the fascinating topic of the presentation at the October 2019 gathering of the Travel Club. Members Karen and Jim Daugherty, with Kathy and Don Bryson, spoke and showed splendid photos of their joint travels lasting 31 days to Myanmar, Hong Kong, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

They particularly enjoyed engaging with the local culture and villagers. Karen said, “One memorable day in Luang Prabang, Laos, we biked on a scenic peninsula, joined in the traditional alms giving to Buddhist monks, then took a boat ride to a small village where they mixed seaweed with spices and dried it on bamboo sheets, making a treat sold in the markets.”

They climbed to the “roof of Indo China,” Fan Si Pan, the highest point in Vietnam. South of Hanoi they were invited to tea—impromptu—by a villager who had been a Viet Cong soldier and said that war was in the past, and he welcomed the Americans as friends.

Karen said that the Grand Palace, the opulent former home of the king of Siam in Bangkok, Thailand, “knocks your socks off” with all the gold leaf applied to the buildings—even to the statues of demons guarding the gates!

The travelers told of a moving experience, watching the sun rise on Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia and reflecting on the thousands of years people had come to see the sun rise at the same spot.  It was an excellent and enjoyable evening for the Travel Club!

In the Newcomers Travel Club, members share their adventurous stories and photos from various trips they’ve taken, both domestic and abroad. You will learn valuable travel tips while enjoying the experiences of your fellow newcomers. The Travel Club typically meets the 3rd Monday of each month (from September to May) at 6:30 p.m. in the Hondius Room at the Estes Park Library. For more information, please contact Ann Wise (225-802-1650) or Jean Van Winkle (515-480-0453) or by email at Travel@estesparknewcomers.org.

Get Interested: Photography

October 22, 2019 by Tech Ops

If you are interested in photography, and want to know how to use your camera more effectively, or learn to take more solid images, or just want to share time together in the field while taking pictures, the Photography Interest Group is the place for you.  Each year the Group examines photography in several ways and in numerous locales, including nature and landscape ventures into Rocky Mountain National Park, around Estes Park, or even down the hill, into Denver to explore street and architectural photography,  Photo technique is also explored to address everything from basic camera settings to multiple exposures, slow shutter work, night shooting, and astral photography.  Equipment can include whatever you have or are comfortable with from iPhones to full lens-system camera set-ups.

Group sign-ups generally include a nearby location, both inside and out, with possible skills development while shooting in the field, editing, and presentation.  This is frequently followed in a week or two with a social gathering to review our best work as a collective, learning from each other, and improving our skills as we go.

Your host is Newcomer, John Shelton, a retired 40-year arts administrator, and active professional creative photographer living in Estes Park.  You can see is body of work at sheltonphotoworks.com.  If you need more information about the group please email John at john@johnmshelton.com.

Interested in Interest Groups?

October 2, 2019 by Tech Ops

Newcomers is a wonderful organization made possible only because of the dozens of members who have volunteered their time and talent in some type of leadership capacity. Would you consider volunteering for a leadership role in Newcomers, perhaps in your favorite Interest Group? We'll help you get started!

If you enjoy a particular Interest Group, you might ask the leader if he or she needs help. Duties generally include setting up the monthly meeting, finding a venue, and emailing your members with specific details and reminders each month. Many Interest Groups meet in member homes, and others in community meeting rooms or local restaurants. Some of our groups simply gather in the great outdoors. Giving back feels good, and fun is guaranteed!

The Newcomers Tech team and VP, Activities are here to provide guidance, support, and technical tools to assist each group leader. As with all of Newcomers, it is truly a team effort.

Do you have a particular interest that doesn’t fit with any of the current groups? Many of our groups started when a Newcomer volunteered to lead an interest group based on his or her special talents and interests. If you’re interested in learning more, please email vp.activities@EstesParkNewcomers.org. We would love to welcome you as part of our team!
