What's New - Summer, 2008

ENJOY OUR ROCKY MOUNTAIN PARADISE WITH HAPPY HIKERS!
First Thursday of the Month

HAPPY HIKING INTO THE SUMMER

Our Newcomer Happy Hikers have these adventures in store for the summer of '08.  On each of these outings be sure to bring/wear sturdy footwear, sun protection, raingear, plenty of water, a snack or two, and your camera.  These are all relatively easy hikes, designed for new hikers and casual walkers.  The pace is always leisurely.  If you have questions, contact Janet and Kent (577-7243) or Judy and Bob (586-3455).

June 5 - Coulson Gulch and Higgins Park
This walk will take us along a babbling brook to a lovely meadow abounding with wildflowers. Other highlights along the way include an old homestead cabin and great views off toward Buttonrock Reservoir, the "Grand Canyon" of the North St. Vrain, and Kenny Mountain (where the Big Elk Fire raged in 2002).  Total distance is about four miles with a gross (actually not that "gross"; it's pretty gradual) elevation gain of about 800 feet.  Lunch will follow the hike at Oskar Blues in Lyons.  Meet in the northeast corner of the Estes Park Library parking lot at 9:00 a.m. to carpool to the Coulson Gulch Trailhead near Big Elk Meadows.

July 3 - Mitchell Lake
One of the blue jewels set in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, this pretty lake is an easy jaunt from the trailhead near Brainard Lake.  Views of several mighty peaks (Audubon, Paiute, Toll, and Pawnee) punctuate this journey through the forest.  Total distance (roundtrip!) is only 2.5 miles, and total uphill is 240 feet.  We'll lunch afterwards at the charming Millsite Inn on Highway 72.  Meet at the Masonic Lodge on Highway 7 at 9:00 a.m. to carpool to the Indian Peaks.

August 7 - Ute Trail West
Follow the Utes' descent from Trail Ridge to the Continental Divide at Milner Pass.  Beginning at the Alpine Visitor Center at Fall River Pass, we'll stroll through the tundra, past some sparkling tarns, into the forest at timberline, by Sheep Rock and the fantastic "Poudre Lake Spires," and down to the Poudre Lakes themselves.  We'll be walking 4.5 miles altogether, but it is all downhill (no elevation gain)!  The new restaurant at the Alpine Visitor Center will be our luncheon place.  Meet at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center at 9:00 a.m. to work out carpooling details.

It's Not Too Late...  Luncheon Reservations by Email!

If you would like to sign up for for email luncheon reservations please send an email with your name and email address to epnewcomersreservations@gmail.com.  You will receive a luncheon information email the first week of the month with luncheon details.  You would then respond with a yes/no before the luncheon deadline.  When you receive a confirmed response from us you will be considered registered for the luncheon for that month.  If for some reason you do not receive a “confirmed” reply by the luncheon registration deadline, you would need to call for a reservation.  We know that occasionally there can be problems with email, and this would preclude any problems.  If you choose not to participate in email, you will receive a luncheon call as usual.
